At approximately 3:30 am the state police communications center received a 911 call reporting a building fire at 174 Rice Corner Rd. The Brookfield Fire Department was immediately dispatched bringing 17 responders staffing three engines, a tanker, and an ambulance to the scene. Assistant Chief Chaffee was the first to arrive, reporting heavy smoke showing. All occupants had gotten out of the building safely. Due to the remote location and lack of a water supply tankers from Sturbridge and Spencer were requested to the scene. A ladder truck from North Brookfield and an engine from East Brookfield also responded to the scene. A West Brookfield company covered the empty Brookfield fire station. The main body of fire was quickly knocked down by an interior crew using a 1 3/4" hose line. Overhaul operations revealed additional fire within the building’s walls which was also extinguished. Firefighters remained onscene for approximately two hours overhauling the fire and conducting salvage operations to minimize the family’s loss. There were no injuries. The family will be staying with relatives temporarily until repairs to the home are made.
